Faculty Fridays Spotlight: Lisa Biles

February 2nd, 2024

In this series, we’re highlighting Selwyn’s faculty and staff. In the classroom, we know our faculty are dynamic and engaged educators with subject matter expertise and an insatiable curiosity to learn. But what are they like out of the classroom? Find out!

Faculty Friday Spotlight:
Lisa Biles | Curriculum Coordinator & 7th and 8th Humanities

How many years have you been in education?
18

What’s your favorite class or project to teach?
I love history and connecting events from the past to what we are living through today. My favorite projects that I have taught have been centered around World War II and the Holocaust. This was such a world-changing event and we are still dealing with the repercussions of it.

What’s the best book you’ve read this year?
I have spent most of my time this year rereading old favorites. From those, I would say that my favorite has been the Discovery of Witches series by Deborah Harkness.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
I really enjoy reading YA paranormal books, but an even more guilty pleasure is playing Candy Crush!

What’s a fun fact about you?
I love to travel! My family and I have been all over the world. Some of my best travel memories are from Italy, Morocco, and Poland.

What’s a hobby you enjoy outside of school?
I read all of the time, but I also love to work crossword puzzles, sudoku, and logic puzzles.

What do you love most about Selwyn?
I love having the autonomy as a teacher to follow the teachable moment. There are always fun facts or side notes that come up during discussion, and being able to truly delve into what the students find the most interesting keeps learning fun for all of us and helps to keep that curiosity strong.

What tip or advice would you give to students?
I have two main pieces of advice:

1. Don’t be afraid to struggle or fail. Handling adversity is where you truly build your character, and figuring out how to bounce back after a setback is when you learn the most.
2. Have fun! Treat everything as an adventure and you will enjoy the world to its utmost.
