Selwyn: A Unique, North Texas Independent Day School
November 3rd, 2016
We offer a private education with a global vision, facilitated by trained educators at the forefront of 21st century educational practices. Like all great institutions, Selwyn began with an inspired idea. From the beginning, our founders believed in the value of a rich education and sought out to find our first headmaster, John Doncaster, an English Professor at SMU.
Since 1957, Selwyn has been committed to shaping the lives of young people in Denton, its surrounding communities, and beyond. From the first day Mr. Doncaster walked through door, we have offered a highly academic, liberal arts program with a global perspective. While the delivery of that education has changed over time, the grounding of our educational philosophy has not.
Today, we continue to be dedicated to our mission to prepare students for success – professionally and personally – through a challenging college preparatory curriculum and comprehensive extracurricular activities. Students are able learn the core values of respect, acceptance, integrity, responsibility and service, in a family atmosphere dedicated to helping them reach their full potential. Academically, that means providing a world-class curriculum, the best teachers, and a focus on the individual student.
We take a hands-on approach to learning, addressing students’ individual interests. We are deeply committed to providing students with the tools to solve conflicts, take risks, make decisions, and lead with courage and integrity. Focusing on both college readiness and global citizenship, students are equipped not only to thrive on their own as they enter adulthood, but prepared to be leaders of the future.
Through the governance provided by National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the guidance of a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees, we adhere to strict academic and educational best practices, and the teachers and administration are at the forefront of these practices. Every day, students are connected to the curriculum, helping them gain the skills they need for the next academic challenge.
We offer a differentiated learning experience with small class sizes by design, ensuring each student is given the attention and the means to pave his or her own way to success and allowing them to progress at their own pace. Socially and emotionally, the students are encouraged to work through challenges, respect each other’s differences, and honor their diverse community. Students are provided with the tools to solve conflicts, take risks, make ethical decisions, and lead with courage and integrity. As a diverse community, our administration and faculty offer a foundation in developing multiple perspectives while embracing every opportunity to weave diversity in thought and action into the students social, emotional, and academic lives.
The Selwyn experience is one full of energy, discovery, and connections that emanate from the classrooms. The true foundation of Selwyn lies within our family and community. Like all things in life, 60 years of history will forever be in the hearts of those associated with Selwyn. Though excitement surrounding the upcoming move is permeable throughout the Selwyn community, there is always a bittersweet feeling about leaving a place you love. Despite our relocation, Selwyn will remain the only independent day school in Denton County.
In the Spring, Selwyn will have a new location, new students, new experiences, new memories and a new legacy. We invite you to join us on this journey as members of the unique Selwyn community, and know that you can look forward to continued growth, development and progression for your children along the way. At Selwyn, we will always be a family, a community and a home away from home.
