A Message from Deb: North Texas Giving Day

Dear Selwyn Community,
In all walks of life, fall is the time to designate philanthropic giving and Selwyn is no exception. This year, Selwyn is kicking off the Annual Fund by participating with fellow nonprofits on North Texas Giving Day. On Thursday, Sept. 22 people across the nation, and the world, will come together to raise as much money as possible for North Texas nonprofits on one day. Our Annual Fund goal is 100% participation. Annual Fund supplements our total operating budget because, as in all independent schools, tuition only covers a portion of our costs. We must fundraise for the rest. At Selwyn, our two major fundraisers are Annual Fund and International Night, in conjunction with the auction held that night. I would like you to truly understand the importance of the gift you will be making on North Texas Giving Day and throughout this year’s Annual Fund. Why give from your essence not your excess?
- Your gift allows us to attract and retain the best faculty
- Your gift allows us to pursue grants from larger foundations
- Your gift acknowledges that you want to leave the next group of students what those before you left for you
- Your gift shows commitment to what we do
- Your gift allows us to continue to teach the whole child
- Your gift allows us to help those students who deserve a chance but need support
When applying for grants, one of the first questions on the form is the percentage of primary stakeholders that give; they do not award grants if those benefitted most by the work do not donate. When asked why not charge what it really costs to educate a student…the short answer is, we try to keep tuition down and allow parents a tax deductible way to support the school. Your gift to Selwyn is tax deductible, your tuition is not. It is important to remember that there are many ways to give.
