Faculty Fridays Spotlight: Jennifer Livas

November 3rd, 2023

In this series, we’re highlighting Selwyn’s faculty and staff. In the classroom, we know our faculty are dynamic and engaged educators with subject matter expertise and an insatiable curiosity to learn. But what are they like out of the classroom? Find out!

Faculty Friday Spotlight:
Jennifer Livas | Director of Early Childhood

How many years have you been in education?
27 years.

What’s your favorite class or project to teach?
My favorite time of day with the students is Story Time. We sit together and marvel at the surprises in the story and the creative illustrations. We always have an action book that makes us get up and move and then a story book. I am always amazed at what the children will find in the story with their young eyes and imagination. I often miss details even after reading it many times. Recently, we were reading the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and a student asked why the mouse wasn’t with his family. This began a deep conversation and quite honestly, it had never crossed my mind!

What’s the best book you’ve read this year?
Working in the Reggio Way, Julianne Wurm

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Coffee! I drink way too much.

What’s a fun fact about you?
I love pencils! I rarely use pens.

What’s a hobby you enjoy outside of school?
Anything outside—gardening, rocking in my swing, riding bikes, hiking, listening to birds.

What do you love most about Selwyn?
The culture! I see happy, independent students who enjoy learning. I also love how much time the students get to spend outdoors. Being at Selwyn feels like an extended family. The students are known by their teachers, siblings see each other throughout the day, and we all are here for the same reason…to learn together.

What tip or advice would you give to students?
First, be yourself. Bring your talents, unique personality traits and style to Selwyn. Second, be open-minded. The world is big enough for all of us. We can learn from each other!
