October 20th, 2023

In this series, we’re highlighting Selwyn’s faculty and staff. In the classroom, we know our faculty are dynamic and engaged educators with subject matter expertise and an insatiable curiosity to learn. But what are they like out of the classroom? Find out!

Faculty Friday Spotlight:
Laura Anderson | 7th & 8th Mathematics

How many years have you been in education?
2

What’s your favorite class or project to teach?
I love algebra! It’s like solving a challenging but fun puzzle. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to revisit one of my favorite math classes, this time as the instructor.

What’s the best book you’ve read this year?
Luna: New Moon by Ian McDonald

What’s your guilty pleasure?
I love bad movies. It is always exciting to experience the work passionate, creative people put out into the world, but I love the work of folks who aren’t particularly talented, but have the courage to see their vision realized, nonetheless.

What’s a fun fact about you?
I worked as a coal miner for years. I drove hail trucks, dozers, and worked for drilling and blasting crews. I am also a state licensed Mine Foreman.

What’s a hobby you enjoy outside of school?
Making stuff. My home office is my own little maker space with all the tools I need to make just about anything I can imagine.

What do you love most about Selwyn?
The amazing students who come each day ready to learn and grow, and the amazing staff who help me learn and grow.

What tip or advice would you give to students?
Never give up! Regardless of the task, or your chances of success, persevere to the end. Learning takes courage, so don’t be afraid to try and fail. Failure is only failure if you don’t learn something from it.
