How a Selwyn School Education Cultivates Global Citizens

August 28th, 2017

The National Association of Independent Schools recently published an article from Keelee Wrenn, the director of marketing and communications at French American International School. In this article, Wrenn delves into the six touchstones they focus on at their school to cultivate global citizens: students with the ability to “think, feel, and act across cultures.”

At Selwyn, we aim to cultivate global citizens as well. Our goal is to guide our students to success by teaching them to be independent thinkers, creative problem solvers, and highly resilient, emotionally intelligent leaders.

Here’s our take on the six touchstones laid out by the French American International School: Identity, Language Study, Community, Curriculum, Travel and Sustainability.

Identity

Regardless of family background, religion, culture, ethnicity, or gender, all students are welcome at Selwyn School. Our school mascot is the Unicorn, and each of our students is equally unique as the fantastical horned horse.

We encourage our students along their educational journey to find themselves and find comfort in their unique identity by tailoring our educational style to the individual student. Selwyn students are allowed to pursue their interests, hobbies and curiosities every single day.

And while we guide our students to self-discovery, we also aim for students to understand each other, their friends, their families, and as much as possible, people from completely different cultures on the other side of the world.

The more we can teach our students about who they are, and how they are related to the people around them, the more successful we will be.

Language Study

Studying foreign language is extremely important to a global citizenship. When you delve into another language, you also immerse yourself into its history, culture, tradition and etiquette.

When you learn how to speak another language, you become more empathetic and learn how to look at the world from another viewpoint.

At Selwyn School, all of our students learn Spanish, but we also offer courses on Russian literature, World History, European History, Eastern philosophies and more.

Community

Our academic environment is interactive. Here students of all ages work together to solve problems, conduct experiments and research in labs, explore the arts, and engage in debates about global issues. This provides your children a chance to lead, as well as follow, in an environment that supports their cognitive, social and emotional learning.

Curriculum

Our extensive, non-sectarian curriculum is designed to prepare students for success at the collegiate level, as well as to be contributors to the world on a global stage. We offer courses from the basics such as History, Science, Math and Art, to the more niche courses like Greek Mythology, Neuropsychopharmacology and Aero-Astro Physics. No matter what your children are interested in, they can find what they are looking for at Selwyn.

Travel

You cannot truly be a global citizen without exploring our planet. That is why Selwyn students participate in our Perspectives Travel Program. Every successive year, the length of the trips increases, along with the students’ responsibilities in preparing and planning for their travels.

Our lower elementary school students travel on day trips within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The upper elementary school students take three-day and week-long adventures to locations such as the Sky Ranch and Camp Grady Spruce.

Middle School students have the opportunity to experience places such as the ocean near Corpus Christi, the mountains of Colorado, and the desert in Big Bend, learning about the history and climate of each location.

Upper School students venture even further out of the classroom to experience other parts of the world.

Sustainability

A major tenant of our curriculum is our Outdoor Education Program.

Selwyn students participate in gardening classes, courses focused on renewable sources of energy, and ecology. They also have the chance to learn to further appreciate the environment while kayaking or adventuring on a nature hike.
