Lower School

Lower School at Selwyn: The Elementary Division

lower school

The foundation that our college preparatory curriculum is based upon begins in Selwyn’s Lower School, kindergarten through the sixth grade. This is the perfect time to introduce children to the fundamental building blocks of learning: listening, reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Our Lower School curriculum aims to prepare young students to become proficient at reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and allow them to build confidence as they learn important skills and logic. By teaching classes like math and science in a very hands-on environment, we establish comprehension and problem-solving abilities.

Lower School students participate in an annual Science Fair and take their first field trips through the Perspectives Travel Program. Each of these unique learning experiences enhances students’ understanding of the world around them and helps them put their developing social skills into practice.

Our Argyle private elementary school educational experience applies a combination of self-discovery and guided practice in an enriching environment. The curriculum goes beyond state and national standards to ensure that all students are being challenged and given the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential.

Curriculum

Kindergarten through Second Grade

We have a multiage approach for our youngest students, grouping equal numbers of kindergarten, first and second grade into pods. Pods support children’s cognitive, social and emotional learning. In these pods they have the chance to lead as well as follow. These are the years where a student’s natural curiosity is nurtured, and their passion to know “why” encouraged.

Third Grade

This last year of lower elementary allows students to take more individual responsibility for their learning while still being in a self-contained classroom. This year serves as the bridge to the departmentalized upper elementary.

Fourth through Sixth Grade

Upper elementary students practice the skills of self-reliance and independence while remaining in a nurturing elementary environment. The course work is divided between three core classes teaching ELA, math, science and social studies. Sixth grade will have the opportunity to join Middle School for electives and extracurricular programs as they look ahead to their next step. Both upper and lower elementary also participate in drama, music, art, PE and Spanish.
